Be Someone’s Hero …. Volunteer

We have all seen or experienced the joy and peace a dog brings to our lives. Through our programs we bring that same love to disadvantaged kids who need it the most. To effectively reach our mission we rely on amazing volunteers. These individuals give of their time and talent to help teens achieve success, find acceptance and build confidence through training a comfort or therapy dog, or to help younger children read.

Whether you have volunteered in the past, or only thought about it, we would ask you to consider one of the following opportunities:

Furry Tales Program Volunteers:  Furry Tale volunteers encourage reading skills by working with one of our program dogs and one elementary child as the child reads to our dog.

Puppy Coaches – Work with the dogs providing additional training and helping with their care.  Puppy coaches can be seen taking the dogs out into the community at local senior homes, stores, schools and parks.  Puppy Coaches can also work with the youth in our program, assisting in their training.

Foster Care Family – Our dogs need a place to live when not school. We are looking for families or individuals interested in opening up their home for a period of 3 months to provide a loving home and assist with supplemental training and socialization for one of our dogs. Foster Care parents are responsible for dropping off and picking up their dog from Dorothy Thomas during school days. We provide for all the dogs’ needs (food, crate, supplies) and medical care. Sitters are needed for shorter terms aiding foster parents when unavailable or for temporary placements.

Group Projects – We have been fortunate to have many schools, organizations and groups support us.  They do this by organizing supply drives, performing group volunteer work, holding fundraisers, selecting Kids and Canines for club participation.  Some examples include:

  • USF’s center for Learning who came with 23 young adults who spent a day painting, doing yard work and so much more.
  • TD Bank who invited the community to drop of their coins to support our program.
  • Carrollwood Day School who brought out 44 middle school students for a day of cleaning.

No experience is required for any of our volunteer positions. Training will be provided.

If you are interested in becoming a Kids and Canines volunteer, please complete our online application or contact the office.

Thank you to all our volunteers.  You are an integral part of our program.
