Be Someone’s Hero …. Volunteer

We have all seen or experienced the joy and peace a dog brings to our lives. Through our programs we bring that same love to disadvantaged kids who need it the most. To effectively reach our mission we rely on amazing volunteers. These individuals give of their time and talent to help teens achieve success, find acceptance and build confidence through the use of a trained dog.  In our reading programs volunteers help younger children read.

Whether you have volunteered in the past, or only thought about it, we would ask you to consider one of the following opportunities:

Furry Tales Program Volunteers:  Furry Tale volunteers encourage reading skills by working with one of our program dogs and one elementary child as the child reads to our dog.

Reading with Patriot Volunteers:  One volunteer assists staff in a class reading of one of our character building books.  This program is an incentive reading program that includes one dog, one reader and one dog handler.  Class participants are encouraged to continue their reading efforts which result in additional visits.  Reading with Patriot is scheduled when requested.

Teen Classroom Coaches:  Coaches work with staff to help deliver the program curriculum.   Class range from 6 to 12 children and utilize between 3 and 6 dogs, on average.  Classes are held during scheduled times throughout the school hours.

Group Projects – We have been fortunate to have many schools, organizations and groups support us.  They do this by organizing supply drives, performing group volunteer work, holding fundraisers, selecting Kids and Canines for club participation.  Some examples include:

  • Woofstock volunteers from Hillsborough Community College.
  • CharityChics whose members did a supply drive for us netting our dogs some wonderful toys and treats.
  • TD Bank who invited the community to drop of their coins to support our program.
  • Volunteers from Bristol Myers Squibb who came to pain, clean and help in the classroom.

No experience is required for any of our volunteer positions. Training will be provided.

If you are interested in becoming a Kids and Canines volunteer, please complete our online application or contact the office.

Thank you to all our volunteers.  You are an integral part of our program.
